Virginia Tech is a university where students can participate in a variety of activities, one being a bowling tournament held in Squires Student Center's Breakzone.
Students were able to register for the tournament through Gobblerconnect, a Virginia Tech website where students can sign up for events happening on campus.
Fifteen students participated in the tournament, which was held on November 17, 2021. The tournament was set up so that each participant played two games. The average of the top 7 scoring players would be taken and those students would move on to the finals to play two more rounds.
The Director of the tournament, Jordan Morris, is not a bowling expert like some of the players, but she works in the Breakzone and was tasked with running the tournament.
Like any competition, there were rewards for the top three players. The third-place winner, John, was rewarded with a bowling ball bag. The second-place winner, Greg, received a LED bowling pin light. Last but not least, the first-place winner, John, won a t-shirt with a bowling pin on it.
The tournament was open to all students, so the skill level varied among participants. Some had bowled on their high school teams, while others had only recently started.
Quinn, a student at Virginia Tech studying business and a member of the bowling club, did not make it to the finals, but he bowled a 115.
“I’ve been bowling competitively for about three months,” Quinn said.
Quinn found out about the tournament through Gobblerfest, an annual event that occurs on the Drillfield to encourage students to join clubs and activities.
“The early games were going pretty well, but my scores started to fall off towards the end,” Quinn said.
The Breakzone Recreation Center offers bowling for all students, and it holds several bowling tournaments and other contests each semester. Along with bowling, students are able to participate in other activities such as table tennis and pool.
